‘Petiole Forage Vessels’
An exploration into arrangement; a harmony between plant & vessel.
Inspired & conceptualised from a series of works by artist Lucio Fontana, the forms share a design quality of 18th century flower bricks - these objects aim to offer creative freedom with additions of a diverse range of plant life.

Collection Synopsis
‘Petiole’
In botany, the petiole is the stalk that attaches the leaf blade to the stem.
Studying & exploring the petiole as an avenue of refining and reducing scale opposing to typically large arrangements, the influential practice of Ikebana brings a refined combination between flower & vase that has been contextualised into Petiole Forage Vessels.
-
Conceptualisation
An evoked response to the premise of Lucio Fontana's 'Concetto spaziale (Spatial Concept), 1966' and a particular ‘pen & India ink drawing marked as no. 3449/4'.
Lucio's pierced 'Buchi' (holes) offered a guided principle as a form of interaction; comprising these as to create a source of engagement with function to the works.
-
Intention
"The intention was always creating beautiful objects that felt non-obtrusive; to occupy space with beauty yet not affect social interaction or not be confined to the space on tables, mantles and surfaces. Freedom to roam."
-
Story
Finding myself restricted & resorting to small glass trinkets to host miniature bouquets, this was the push to explore avenues for housing these particular floral styles with a particular attention to a minimised scale.
-
Sentiment
"I find great joy in the sentiment that not only will each piece be one-of-one, but the owner will add their own inclusions making it their own. Every piece will vary depending on the where they are in the world; their walks, environments, seasons, plant choices, their eye & also creativity."
-
Motive
"The motive for this collection is for people to perceive the world a little differently - being out in the world with light sense of stimulus & therapeutic activity, stumbling or seeking beauty that would often be overlooked. To bring home a piece of nature that could be a new home as to highlight and enjoy neglected beauty.
I like to think of the petiole as memento's or souvenir's from daily dog walks, hikes, and to be actively enjoyed when returned home."
-
Wedding / Occasion Commission
With the core of the collection centring around social interaction with the inspiration of ‘runners’ stemming from long table formats - if you would like a personal commission of a bespoke set, please contact through the enquiry page and we will reply promptly.
-
Process
"Kurinuki was a key technique throughout the range of work; slicing the shapes & hollowing out forms as to not disrupt a surface quality or shape made from the original proportions as per the cut or moulded basis."
-
Design & Structure
"I believe I subconsciously designed each of the vessels as lidded forms as to differentiate them from objects of nature itself. To enhance a notion that the works have been formed by hand with a distinct 'function' yet be able to blend into a natural landscape"
-
Arrangements & Additions
The collection possesses great creative versatility for every individual to utilise in their own way. The nature of the collection embodies a potential to form ‘sets’ that coexist and elevate one another; as pairs, trios & groups of variable pairings.
Each perforation tailors to host multiple stem sizes with many varied styles and approaches to try with each potential arrangement.
-
Guidelines & Usage
Each lid offers a reversible design to allow more freedom to the creative preference; based on variation & layout of perforations along with overall aesthetic. Both variations are showcased in the images provided with each of the items.

Sustainability
"Sustainability has always been at the heart of the collection. Not to oppose lavish store-bought bouquets, but to reduce our environmental footprint and foster the act of mindful foraging. The most minute addition can create the most enticing display, less is truly more."
-
Plantable Business Cards

With a specific size & scale as a means to offer a subtle floral addition to any setting throughout the household (equally restaurants & café's). These unintrusive yet incredibly effective pieces can notably be paired to create 'sets' within & throughout spaces.
‘Runners’
Designed to coincide with elongated and rectangular dining tables. Running with a low height through the centre of dining arrangements - embodying a meadow path for social occasions & home-setting placements.

‘Lidded Cubes & Columns’
Cornered profiles with a differed aesthetic to its more rugged & textured brick' counterparts.
‘Frogs’
A further modernistion to a traditional ceremonial & ritualistic form - a range of variations and sizes were explored through the collection.
‘Ponds’

Extended Projects:
Seeded Business Cards & Reconstructed Paper
Based loosely on the Japanese practice of Kintsugi (金継ぎ) - the premise is to combine multiple used, unwanted & broken resources to form a core elevated outcome from its original iteration. Mainly comprised of discarded drawings, unwanted notes & excess packaging from received parcels, these are all infused with fallen petals, leaves & wildflower seeds to be made beautiful & plantable. When the business cards are no longer of use, they can be placed directly into the soil and back to the earth.
Purchasing a Petiole Forage Vessel, the intention brings a full-circle sentiment as a responsible resource — for flourishing seasons offers you to pick your own planted flowers for your personal ceramic wares.
-
Figurative Linework & ‘Still Life’
Captivated by ceramic forms providing key subject matter through imagery, the inclusion of ceramic material & soil are also used as a primary resource to stain paper & canvas - conveying a relationship between the physical artwork and the ‘state of being’ that is translated from. With the figurative composition, some works convey a closely intimate focal point where the figuration may be lost and full abstraction / linework take precedence.

The philosophy for the space has been pieced together to foster an environment encouraging calmness and solitude that will be channeled & expressed in the works.
The studio has been a drawn outcome of productive utilitarian principles complimented with soft pensive lighting, grounding ambiance and personal decorative adornments to be enjoyed during workshops - opposing to typically bright and harsh studio environments.
